Subject: Arrivederci
Date: E-mail sent from the Ft. Lauderdale, FL airport - August 25, 2005 12:26:41 PM ET
As many of you know, but many do not, tomorrow I begin a new job with Semester at Sea, as the IT Coordinator for the Fall 2005 voyage around the world. We will be traveling east from Nassau, The Bahamas to San Diego, CA, with ports in between including Venezuela, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, and Hawaii.
The journey begins with some excitement:
I am currently sitting in the Ft. Lauderdale airport having purchased two tickets to Nassau just to get out in this oncoming hurricane (or tropical storm) Katrina. My first flight was canceled and the next time that airline is flying is on Sunday which of course is after I'm supposed to report to the ship, so I bought another last minute plane ticket and so far it looks like I'll be taking off in 1 hour. Fortunately the Ft. Lauderdale airport has free wi-fi, so I'm able to send out this long overdue e-mail.
As my last day at the Monitor was yesterday, I haven't had the time to design and develop a great website for my journey, but I hope to in the next few weeks. For now, you can visit http://atsea.amyandrews.com to see a list of addresses where you can write me snail mail. This sub-domain of amyandrews.com will be updated regularly with photos and observations along my voyage. If horrible design and gaudy colors offend you terribly, you may want to wait a week or so, I promise it will get better. What I have up was built on less than 2 hours of sleep.
I look forward to sharing this adventure with you all, but if you would rather not receive my SPAM, please reply to this message with REMOVE in the subject line. I am also more than happy to cater to your e-mail requests. If you would rather receive my updates at another address please pass along your request.
Unlike my Semester at Sea trip in 1999, I will have e-mail access on the ship, but as internet access is expensive and I'm hoping to get out from behind the computer screen every once in awhile, my e-mailing will be kept to a minimum. I welcome your e-mails, but please forgive me if I don't respond immediately.
Please note: This job move means that I no longer have a csps.com or csmonitor.com e-mail address. Please make sure your address book is up to date. The best e-mail to use is
, but any e-mail address you have for me (as long as it's not csps.com or csmonitor.com) will work.
My love to you all, and I hope to see as many of you as possible when I return to the states in December.
